Peer support

Do not belittle the need for peer education and training. whether it’s a structured link program for credit, gen Ed support, or extracurricular inclusion, peers need help to understand autism, communication and social deficits, anxiety/ frustration related behaviors behavior and acceptance in an age appropriate way. It’s somewhere in between catering to and ignoring, it’s being treated like any other teen, it’s feeling welcome, it’s being accepted.

hopefully there’s someone at your school who is START trained, someone willing to take the time to advocate for your student, supportive administration and staff, students who volunteer to be trained and implement the supports, and kind hearted, intuitive people all around who will patiently wait for the strategies to work their magic until your student blossoms and makes it well worth everyone’s while.
