Independence for kids on the spectrum is always a work in progress, but a constant goal. Getting dressed progresses to include picking out your own (appropriate) clothes, putting dirty clothes in the hamper, dressing after a shower or swimming, and changing out of dirty clothes. Getting your own food progresses to making healthy choices, ordering on your own, making your own breakfast and lunch, and putting your dishes in the sink or dishwasher (and food back in the frigde) when done.
Pet care has to progress from gentle handling, to feeding and brushing, to training, and, last but not least, poop scooping.
Constant teaching, modeling, rewarding, and gradual progression= independence.
