“I can’t stand the smell of your breath”

Smell sensitivity is a very hard sensory issue to overcome, manage, communicate appropriately and handle delicately. To move a child with social and communication deficits from thrashing her head, plugging her nose, or being rude and blunt, to discretely moving back, popping a mint or holding her breath takes a lot of practice, theory of mind work, and a strong reinforcement schedule-and then you have to hope and pray that the behaviors generalize to every situation (and every type of halitosis:)
