a thank-you to our history teacher

I just wanted to thank you for allowing Belle to be assigned to your classes again this year. She was relieved to know that her schedule was familiar and that she has teachers she likes and “who like her”.  Even though we have to transition to a high school, every day counts and has an impact on Belle’s progress.

I don’t know if you were aware, but the historical museum had a civil war event in July. I took Belle and her friend and they both found it very interesting. There was a soldier there with his encampment, and a historical artifact collector with stories about every piece he owns. It was nice for Belle to be able to relate to this historical event because of what she learned in your class.

She also said something very funny this summer after seeing the Toy Story 3 movie. I didn’t see it with her so when she came home I asked her how she liked it. She said, “mom, it was just like Hitler….. the new toys came in and the old toys were afraid that they were taking over so they tried to destroy them all.”  It’s very obvious that your unit on the Holocaust taught Belle a great deal about how history teaches us all lessons about life.

You have helped Belle become part of our society and the school community.

Our goals-independence, socialization, and learning opportunities.

Without access to the general ed curriculum and constant learning opportunities a child with autism will never be able to gain socialization skills- they will continue to focus on their special interests and stay in their own egocentric world, shutting everyone else out.
